Not A Good Weekend

For many reasons but mostly because my Mom went into the hospital on Friday. I think in my last post I mentioned that she was supposed to go to the doctor Friday. Before that could happen, however, she started feeling really bad. Maggie saw her, using the installed cameras, laying on the couch with a bucket and called her. She was dizzy and feeling poorly so rather than continue on the same hamster wheel, Maggie instructed her to call the squad. It took two days for her to get a room. Since Friday she's steadily been going downhill. Not only has her confusion increased to the point of hallucinating it seems but she's being combative. She's not able to eat; she hasn't slept and she's apparently in constant movement and doesn't stop talking. Anne went up yesterday and though she seemed to know that she was her daughter, she couldn't recall her name. She's been talking to Richard and apparently talking to former students as well.

They've done a TON of tests and can really find nothing significant to cause this sudden change. I got up this morning (having about 3 hours of sleep) and saw through her MyChart that they were in the process of doing an MRI. I'm no doctor so the results are a little confusing but from my read, most of the scan came back unremarkable but she does have a CMB (cerebral microbleed) which is consistent with dementia. It showed atrophy as well (shrinking of her brain) which happens with age as well. The neurologist told Maggie that the atrophy was more significant than she would have expected for a woman my mom's age (85). The question I have and what happened to cause this switched to be flipped?

I'm not sure what's going to happen from this point. Being a Monday, I'm hoping there will be more answers but who knows. I hope she's calmer today. I hope she got sleep. I certainly didn't.

Part of the reason I didn't get sleep was because around 10:30 I woke up and saw I had a text from Tim, my step-brother (Richard's son). He was updating me on Joel, my other step-brother, the oldest of Richard's sons. He has struggled for a while with depression but I guess recently things got really bad and he'd even attempted suicide a couple times. Tim seems to think some of this may be due to some medication that he's been on too long. Regardless, he checked into a facility in Arizona about three weeks ago. So I had that on my mind. Plus Mom. Plus school.

Why, when it rains, does it pour? Just when you think you've got your head above water, something else happens and drags you under. I wish I could be up in Columbus but unfortunately I need to get my shit back together at school.

Speaking of which, I guess I'd better get a move on. I know that in my ELA classes, I'll be showing the movie for Catching Fire but I have NO idea what I'm doing in Government. I might have to ease the kids back in today with a video or something. I'm a terrible teacher.

K...fingers crossed that things turn around for Mom today. Here's to a better Monday than Sunday. Later!
