Last Straw

Well, yesterday I found out where the line was and how much bullshit I would take from Greg. Monday's antics a la Greg bled into my day yesterday and I was forced to spend most of the morning dealing with his nonsense.

It started with him dropping by my room to deliver his phone. I sat him down to discuss the goals he would need to meet (by May 1st) in order to be allowed to carry his phone throughout the day. I was pretty stern with him and made it clear, as I always do with him, that his behavior was unacceptable. I also made it clear that these decisions weren't based on his mother's wishes and that cell phone restrictions were now law in Ohio. His reaction as he walked out of the room was to mutter under his breath, "This is fucking bullshit." Of course Lisa heard it and I immediately let his mother know.

From there, I found out a bit later (2nd bell) that he never went to 1st period and instead headed to the main office where he raged. Lisa (and later our school psyche) came to me to let me know that Greg accused me of being racist. And that was it. With those words, with that accusation, I was done. It took me a while to calm down enough to put together an email to his mother without allowing my feelings to take over but eventually I did. It said:

I'm really trying to gather my thoughts and try to voice my concerns without allowing my emotions to take over. I understand Greg's struggles and perception. However, I think at this point, it would be best if next year Greg goes on someone else's caseload. Greg accused me today of being a racist and with those words, I can not allow myself to be in a position where unfounded accusations like that are thrown at me. Words matter.

Along with that email, I also emailed the administrator in charge of Greg and said:
I'm planning on sending this email to Greg's mother. Greg can't be allowed to continue spewing these harmful words at anyone and everyone when he doesn't get his way.

I didn't want to look at my email yesterday to see if mom had a response but of course I did. She said,
Muir-
I am very very sorry.
This will be a very difficult lesson learned for Greg, yet a fair consequence to his actions. Unfortunately he will be losing an amazing educator who has been a highly effective teacher and advocate for him.
I will deeply miss your insight and expertise-

I kind of get the sense from this email that she's a little relieved that I won't be Greg's case manager. But whatever...maybe I'm reading into it. Regardless, I'm done. Of course I'll have to finish out the year with him and do my job like I did before and I'll continue to have him in class (even next year) but I will no longer be his "safe space". He's lost all credibility and trust with me. These are words that can ruin a person and the fact that he thinks it's acceptable (because he's never had a consequence when he spews this hatred), well, it's not acceptable to me and it's unforgivable.

Oh, and he also said to our school psyche who is bi-racial and was trying to help regulate him yesterday that she was "letting her white side out too much". Fucking asshole.

Thankfully today I'll only have to deal with him one time during 6th bell because my morning will be spent at central office. My sped department has a 1/2 professional development day where we'll try to riddle out what the fuck we're doing next year.

On a brighter note, HOW ABOUT THOSE REDS!!! Of course I didn't get to watch the game last night but I watched the highlights! Five in a row! Keep it up!

Jim's working late tonight so I'll have the house to myself and I won't be making dinner. I'll just have leftovers/

And that's all I've got. Guess I'll go make myself pretty (ha!) and head out. Is this fucking week over yet?! Later! Happy Wednesday. Fingers crossed it's a better day than the last two.
