Snake Wrangler

I mean...if it's not a chipmunk, it's a mole. If it's not a mole, it's a snake! Thankfully, the snake that Scout discovered yesterday did not come inside and he didn't technically catch it.

I was getting dinner ready last night and Scout was out; Boo was in. I actually had the sliding glass door closed because I was finally forced to turn on the AC (so muggy). I noticed that Scout was at the door so I walked over to let him in but he refused. He just kept looking at the step and twisting his head back and forth and then walking around it. (It's one wooden step that runs the length of the sliding glass door out onto the deck which Jim built and covers a hole that leads down into the underpart of the deck. I think you can guess where this is leading.) So I closed the door but then Boo wanted out. So he went and then proceeded to copy exactly what Scout was doing: Walking around the step, looking at it, nosing at the one corner, twisting his head back and forth, backing up and then repeating.

At this point I had a feeling what we were dealing with so I said to Jim, "There's something under the step. I need you to come lift it so I can see." And Jim says, "What is it?!" (He said this with a slight shake to his voice. Jim's terrified of snakes.) I said, "I think it's a snake." And Jim shook his head and said, "Uh uh...not me!" Me: "Yes, you. Just go out, it's in the one corner. Go on the other side and lift it so I can get a looksee." So I wrangle the boys inside, run out to the garage to get a tool while Jim shakily goes out to the deck (without shoes, mind you). I come back. I'm inside and Jim's outside, the door is closed and I say, "Okay lift." He tilts the step up from the back so it's tilted for me to view what's under and sure enough, there's a huge, coiled snake. I yell (so Jim can hear me through the door), "Yep...it's snake." Jim nearly drops the step but he manages to keep it together. I grasp my tool (a small hand-held rake) and say, "When I open the door a crack, you lift again." And Jim says, "Don't whip it on me!" What an idiot! I said, "Really!? I'm going to shove it through the hole and down under the deck!" He lifts, I open, and rake the little (big) fucker out. Ugh!

I'm not sure I can take much more of nature at my house, I'll tell you that. I'm NOT okay with snakes on my deck! Thankfully Scout is quite attuned to the varmints so he lets me know when they are close. I just hope the animals in the area are sharing with their friends about Scout and his wily ways. Based on the number of animals he's killed and found lately, however, I don't think they're getting it yet.

JAYSUS! Traffic is horrific! We just had major storms roll through with horrid rain so of course the highways are whacked. I'll be taking side roads.

School. Thank the baby Jesus that today is the last real day of class. I'm not sure I could take one more week of trying to teach these kids. They've had it. I've had it. Done!

Dinner tonight will be Cincy Chicken Chili cheese coneys and 3-ways with a salad. Yummy!

K - I'd best get going since I'm going the back way...takes a little longer. Happy Friday! Woot! This time next week I'll be getting ready for my last couple hours at school for the 21-22 school year! Hot Dog! Later!
