Slight Shit Show

I was all excited for yesterday because I had one kid in my room with standard time. I thought, "Hell yeah! I'm going to have a cake day!" And for the most part I did. However, the student in my room? Who had to have a room to herself, which I didn't understand. Well, after 15 minutes of her taking the ACT and bawling the whole time, I got it. She was fine when she got to my room. She was fine when I went through instructions. She was fine while she bubbled in her answer booklet. She was fine as I gave her batteries for her calculator. She was even fine when I told her she had 45 minutes for the first portion of her test. I set my timer, sat down at my computer and proceeded to get some shit done.

After about 10 minutes, I realized she was sniffling a lot but I just thought she had a cold. And then I noticed she wasn't marking in her answer document much. And then she got up to get a tissue and I saw her face and it was streaked with tears. I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to stop and talk to her becuase I didn't want to have to report an "incident". I emailed a couple people to see what they knew about her (I'd never laid eyes on her) but no one emailed me back. I decided to let things go on until the first part of the test ended.

After 45 minutes, I told her to put her pencil down (though it wasn't even in her hand) and I said, "Are you okay?" (What a stupid question...she was obviously NOT okay.) She said, "NO!" And then proceeded to tell me she had anxiety, she isn't medicated, she didn't want to take this test but her grandmother wanted her to (grandma has custody), she's really slow, she's not going to do well and on and on and on. I wracked my brain and asked her if she thought extended time would help her and she said she has extended time but didn't want it for the test because it wouldn't do any good. I asked her what she wanted to do after high school and she said "trade school". I then said, "Well then this test doesn't matter. Just do what you can and know that it isn't going to hurt your future."

In the end, she managed, after the math part, to get it slightly together and take the last two portions without many tears.  The thing is, why was this basket case made to take this test? It did her no good! And why was I not made aware of this chicks possible issues. Because when I finally talked/emailed with her guidance counselor, she was well aware this girl had major anxiety. It would have been nice to have a little heads up. But of course no one ever thinks beyond their own shit. So frustrating.

So yeah, the day wasn't as easy as I'd expected but it was still easy. I got lots done (two IEPs written and two unit study guides and test made. I managed to get to Costco during my break which was nice. And now I'm back to the usual grind. However, it's Wednesday and the rest of the week should be pretty mundane.

Dinner tonight - Jim wants hamburgers. I'll probably make them with fries and green beans.

I finished The Last of Us yesterday which bums me out. I always hate finishing up a season in a series because then I have to wait a year until I get to see it again. It was a good one. I loves me some Pedro Pascal! AND!!! Ted Lasso starts today! Woot! Plus I still have Shrinking (although I think that one is about done...maybe 1 or 2 episodes left) and Top Chef is back and Yellow Jackets starts soon.

I did a yoga this morning - someone new - that was really good. The sequences she did really prepared me for warrior 3 which I was able to do and hold for several breaths. I was pretty proud of myself.

And that's about all I've got. Best figure out what I'm going to wear today. Definitely jeans but can't decide what to put on top. Happy Wednesday! Later!
