1920s Slang

I think we need to go back to our roots. Some of the slang from the 20s is priceless and I'd personally like to see a comeback. Here's just a snippet of some oldies but goodies:


Word/phrase: Applesauce
Meaning: An expletive (like "horse feathers")
Sentence: Aw applesauce! I forgot to bring my bible to church!

Word/phrase: Dead Soldier
Meaning: Empty beer bottle
Sentence: Yo, garcon! I've got a dead soldier over here! Could I get another?

Word/phrase:Ducky
Meaning: Very good
Sentence: Why yes, I'd love for you to replace my dead soldier - that would be just ducky!

Word/phrase: Flat tire
Meaning: Dull-witted and disappointing date
Sentence: It's a wonder I married Jim after he was such a flat tire on our first date. (I kid)

Word/phrase: Gams
Meaning: A woman's legs
Sentence: Would you get a load of the gams on that dame?!

Word/phrase: Rag-a-muffin
Meaning: A dirty person
Sentence: Maggie was quite the rag-a-muffin yesterday. By 5 PM, she hadn't even showered yet.

Word/phrase: Sinker
Meaning: doughnut
Sentence: Next time I go up to Columbus, Maggie wants me to bring a dozen sinkers from Holtman's!

Word/phrase: Berries
Meaning: Something pleasing (different from a boy's berries)
Sentence: Dinner and a movie would just be the berries! I'd love to go!

Word/phrase: Dogs
Meaning: feet
Sentence: Walking with the Kohl's all day on Tuesday - my dogs were killing me.

Word/Phrase: Giggle water
Meaning: an intoxicating beverage
Sentence: Yo! Garcon! I could use some more giggle water over here if I'm going to be stuck with this flat tire!

Word/Phrase: Struggle Buggy
Meaning: The backseat of a car
Sentence: I got caught neckin' with my beau in the struggle buggy last night and now I'm in hot water.

Word/Phrase: Bubs
Meaning: Boobs, breasts,
Sentence: Did you get a look at the bubs on that dame?! My god they are the bee's knees!

Word/Phrase: Bushwa
Meaning: A euphemism for "bullshit"
Sentence: What a load of bushwa that the Reds didn't win last night!

Word/Phrase: Chunk of lead
Meaning: Unattractive female
Sentence: Did you see the chunk of lead he showed up with!? What a dog!

Word/Phrase: Choice bit of calico
Meaning: Attractive female
Sentence: "You are one choice bit of calico, Muir! This daddy-o would like to take you out on the town!"
