After I left the vet I, of course, talked to Maggie and she started relating stories to me about Max and his first meeting with C.C. and Zoe. She told me a story that Charlie had told her of Max as a puppy, having his first brush in the water. And with these stories I was able to dry my tears and drive home. And as I did, I remembered the first time I met Max. I had gone to California to visit Maggie (you know, after she had left me for this guy named Charlie!). Max wasn't like any dog I'd ever met. Often dogs are wary around new people...unsure. They certainly wouldn't abandon their own mommy and daddy to spend the night with a complete stranger! Max would though. I think the best times for Max was when someone would come and visit and spend the night because it meant someone new and exciting to cuddle with. So anyway, there I am, heading to bed that first night in California and Max is begging to sleep with me. Missing my own dogs, I of course, relent. Did I mention that Max wasn't your normal sleeper? He HAD to be under the covers. And if you didn't let him, he'd make this high-pitched whine, in your ear until he got what he wanted. So of course, I lift the covers and he burrows all the way down to my feet. And we both fall asleep. A couple hours later I wake up, unsure of what's happening. Why is my leg all wet? And then I realize, Max is licking and licking and licking and licking my leg. If I hadn't stopped him, he would have licked me for hours, I'm sure. It was like Max was a deer and I was his salt lick. Ridiculous. So I manage to get him to stop and we both go back to sleep. Until a couple hours later, I'm woken up again but this time, not so subtly. Nope this time, Max was humping my leg. Well, that was that...out he went! I mean, I'm not THAT easy and I won't be taken ADVANTAGE of! But really, who could blame the guy, I am pretty irresistible!

One of the things that keeps my heart a little lighter is thinking of all the things about Max we loved and all the love that he gave us. I picture Max up in heaven, sitting under a lemon tree (with one in his mouth), surrounded by stuffed toys and chillin' with his sisters, Zoe and C.C. And he's probably got his Grandpa Charlie nearby and he's looking down and smiling and knowing that he was the luckiest bumblebee to ever be.
Love you Maxi! You will always be in our hearts!
