I'm so glad that it's Saturday and I have nothing to do but wait for J.J. and Trip to get here.
Yesterday was an emotional mind f%&k. Seeing David's family was so hard. It was good to see all of them but so sad. They seem to be doing all right. I think every one who knew David knew that this could (would) happen sometime but it never makes you ready. Everyone of them told me how lucky David was to have had me in his life and how stupid he was to ever let me go. It made me feel a little relief but it's so sad that it just was never enough for him and he could never find peace and happiness in the good parts of life.
At the get together, they had 3 poster boards full of pictures with David and his friends and family. Lots of Dead stuff too. One of the posters was pretty much all of me and David. It was so strange to see that I was still so much in the minds of David's family after nearly 14 years. Another of the posters featured the chocolate lab (Healy) we had gotten together. Every one of the pictures of she and David were in places where we lived together. Just seeing it was so weird. Oh, and one nice thing, Healy died about 2 or 3 years ago - right after the February ice storms. David's family got her ashes when they cleaned out his stuff at his house and they are going to scatter both David's and Healy's ashes together at the Isle of Palms in S.C. He would have been so happy about that I think.
After the get together, I went to the Kenwood Fridays to meet with all our old friends - the ones we would go on tour with. It was so good to see and talk to everyone. One of the guys, Nels, said to me how hard a time he's had coming to grips with David's death. He hadn't seen David in years and most everyone concurred with his feeling. I said that it doesn't surprise me at all. David was in every one of these people's lives when they met and eventually married their wives. The largest, most important part of their lives were formed during the time they were friends with David. And of course, the tragedy of it all makes it that much harder. Anyway, it was good to see everyone and I hope it doesn't take another tragedy to get us all together again.
So today, like I said, I'm just hanging around until Trip and my little J Bird get here. Hopefully around 3:30 or so. Jim works until about 5 and once he gets home, we'll all head over to Silver Spring House for dinner. Can't wait - chicken and rib dinner, here I come! K - reading and relaxing.
