Dream Doozies

I haven't had many dreams recently that I remembered and then yesterday as I was driving to go to lunch with the ladies, I was listening to Dr. Oz on the Oprah channel on XM radio (he's the only one on her channel I can stand) and he was giving this technique, actually to fall back to sleep when you accidentally wake up in the middle of the night. It involves putting yourself back into the dream that you were hopefully in - even if it was a nightmare. He says if you don't do this and you wake up more fully, you will have a harder time falling back to sleep. Also, if you do this, you are more likely to remember your dreams when you wake up later. So, lo and behold, Jim and his loud ass snoring wake me out of my dream so I used the technique and it worked.

Here is one snippet:

I was in the car - an OLD car and I was Scout Finch and Atticus, my dad, was driving (from To Kill a Mockingbird). I asked him where we were going and he said to the bank and I asked why and he said so he could deposit $1.70 into an account. I asked why $1.70 and he said he hadn't been saving money for my college and he figured he better start since Harvard is expensive. He then said that every week until I go to college, he is going to deposit $1.70 into an account. Hmm. I remember thinking that since it was the 30s, this would probably be enough for Harvard since I was about 8 in the dream and you figure 10 years for 52 weeks. Uh, yeah, that's about $784. Maybe one year.

Next dream:
So I have to preface that I have a student on my case load - I'll call him Mike - and he is going into his 4th year at Kings this year - so he should be a senior. In reality, because he has effed around so much, he has enough credits to be considered a sophomore, maybe (He's taken Biology for 3 years and still hasn't passed). I mean, he's a nice kid who doesn't cause problems and he's respectful but he just doesn't do crap. I think he has major depression.

My dream: I'm at school and I notice that at a portion of the cinder block wall by this doorway is all messed up. So I get real close and look; bend down and check out the shoddy job someone did on painting it and then I go and pull one of the cinder blocks out of the wall. And Mike falls out. Apparently he owed some thug something, money I guess and because he hadn't paid, he got stuffed into a wall to die. Kind of like Edgar Allen Poe's Cask of Amontillado. It was weird. The weirdest thing though was that he could have screamed and made noise and everyone would have heard it but he didn't.

So then I dreamt that I was at school, teaching my history class. I was showing a movie and I had to leave for just a few minutes. I told the class I would be right back. So I get back and I don't realize at first that one of my kids is missing because it's dark (we'll call him Brett - he's a skipper). When the lights go on after the movie, however, I notice right away and I say, "where's Brett?" and the rest of the class goes, "he left when you were out of the room." Gee, thanks for letting me know right away.

So I pick up the phone and call Mr. C - the assistant principal in charge of special ed - and I say, "Mr. C, Brett is missing from my classroom."

He asks, "Where is he?"

Me: "Um, I don't know. That's why he's missing. Apparently, he left at the beginning of class when I went to the bathroom for about a minute and a half."

Mr. C: "It's the end of the period right now and you just noticed he's gone?"

Me: "Yes, I was showing a movie."

Mr. C: "Mrs. Hanke, I don't have time to deal with you and your problems with your students."

Me (pissed now): "Well, that's really too bad because as the special ed administrator, it's your job. If I were you, I'd get my fat ass out of my cushy chair behind my desk and start trying to track down Brett" And then I went on a tangent.

I told him that he had better bone up on his understanding of special ed because if he didn't, he was going to cause the high school to have a lawsuit by a pissed off parent because he didn't know his ass from the principal's ass (they are so closely intertwined). I was so pissed that I started to cry. All the kids in the room got really uncomfortable cause they could hear me so they got up and left (yeah, that would never happen).

After I got off the phone with him, I went to the auditorium for a meeting and saw one of Mr. C's old history buddies sitting with Lisa (Mr. C used to be a history teacher at our school) and from my story he got to see what an ass Mr. C is and how ignorant and stupid he is. It was awesome.

Then I woke up. And Sami jumped on my face. She had to pee I guess. Coffee!!!

Are you a little anxious about the administration not knowing anything about special ed? You do have the craziest dreams. I love 'em!!!

Miscaluculation: It should have been $884 for Harvard.

You crack me up. I especially like the part about "Mike" falling out of the wall. THe whole administration thing is pretty funny too, sounds about right though!
