So to update those who haven't been in the loop - yesterday, I was called to come into the Clermont County Courthouse for a trial. I knew almost immediately that I was going to be picked. Here's why: First of all, the bailiff, when he lined us up put me in the 4th position - sitting me in the jury box (several of us originally in the jury box were chosen) with about 10 others. Then, during questioning by the lawyers for the defense, I was the ONLY person that was asked strictly personal questions having nothing to do with what the case. The lawyer said, "So, Mrs. Hanke, it says here you're a teacher; what do you teach?" I answered. Then he said, "How long have you been there?" and then, "Where did you get your degree(s)?" and finally, "Do you like your job?" That was it. When we were finally chosen for jury duty (after a 15 minute recess) I was juror #1! Crikey! And, I did, kind of, try and get out of it. I told the judge - when asked if anyone had a problem with the schedule of the trial - that if the trial lasted into Friday (which it isn't expected to) that I have a doctor's appointment to determine my need for surgery. He didn't bite. Nor did the lawyers. So at this point we've heard opening statements and today I have to be at the courthouse at 10:30. There are only 4 witnesses to be called and 2 of them will be via videotape. Should be interesting and though it is somewhat a pain in my ass and the case isn't thrilling like a murder or anything, it's still exciting to be a part of this. Once. After this, Clermont County can leave me alone for a while.
In other news - it has stopped raining here - finally. There are some crazy gurgling noises coming from the basement. I'm pretty sure that it's a demon of some sort setting up house but Jim says these are good noises because it means that the water is actually flowing under the house rather than pooling around the sides and flooding our basement. I'm just happy the sun is going to shine today and start allowing the pond that is my backyard to absorb into the ground. Bubba still won't venture off the deck so has to be taken out front. He's being such a baby! Like he's a little kitten who can't stand water. He just told me to "suck it". Really! He said, "Suck it Mom! You go try peeing outside while your feet sink into the mud." I told him that if he wanted to learn to use the toilet and go that route, I would totally support him but he just glared at me, shook his head and then started licking his armpit. He's being ornery this morning! We're in a fight!
K - gotta go and figure out what to wear today. The courtroom is freezing and I don't want to wear jeans. I'll update later and give you all the exciting details of the trial - if it's over that is. Later.
